Choral Scholarships

The Dean and Chapter offer choral scholarships (subject to a vacancy being available) to countertenor, tenor, and bass singers in conjunction with the University of Surrey.  Those applying for undergraduate or postgraduate courses (in any subject) are eligible for consideration. Choral Scholarships are normally tenable for three years, but this will depend on the University course. It may also be possible to hold a choral scholarship during a gap year.

The basic choral scholarship is £600 a year. There are also fees from occasional broadcasts, recordings, special services and some concerts.

An additional subsistence grant of £400 per annum is made available to cover dates falling outside of university term time. Details must be discussed with the Cathedral Music Office.

A schedule is issued at the start of each term. The normal pattern of choral services in the Cathedral is:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday:
Evensong at 5.30pm preceded by a full practice at 5.05pm (Monday is sung by men only followed by a men's practice until 6.30 pm)

Sunday:
Sung Eucharist at 9.45am (full practice at 9.15am)
Mattins at 11.30am (except 2nd Sunday of the month)
Evensong at 6.30pm (full practice at 5.50pm)

Prospective candidates should apply to the University in the normal way and apply for choral scholarships, giving details of musical experience and the names and addresses of two referees, to:
