Guildford Cathedral Choir
The choir currently numbers 20 boys and 13 girls (including probationer choristers) and 6 lay clerks; the gentlemen of the choir, who sing alto, tenor and bass. The choir also includes a number of choral scholars each year; these are singers who are studying at the University of Surrey, other higher education establishments or are taking a gap year.
The boys are all educated at the Lanesborough Preparatory School which is the Cathedral Choir School or the Royal Grammar School, they rehearse every weekday morning (except Wednesday) at Lanesborough and sing Evensong in the Cathedral on Tuesdays and Thursdays; in addition they sing two or three services on Sundays.
The girls' choir, which takes choristers from any school in the area, was formed in 2002 and has added an extra dimension to the musical foundation. The girls sing separately from the boys; they rehearse on Tuesday evenings, sing Evensong on Fridays and have one duty on a Sunday.
Boys normally audition for the Cathedral choir between the ages of 7 and 9; girl choristers are auditioned from the age of 10 or 11. Parents are invited to apply to the Cathedral Organist at any time to arrange an audition for their son or daughter, or to make an enquiry about any aspect of the work of the choir. Katherine Dienes or Paul Provost to make an enquiry.
Boys' parents will need to apply to Lanesborough School at the same time. For further details and to request a prospectus please visit www.lanesborough.surrey.sch.uk.
