Free Coffee Concerts

Thursday 22 June at 11:15 - Grange Park Opera

Guildford Cathedral is delighted to welcome Grange Park Opera to perform at the informal Coffee Concert on Thursday 22 June at 11.15am.  The concert will include a selection of songs from the stage and opera, performed by soprano, Rosie Clifford.  Rosie, a member of the chorus of Grange Park Opera, performing in Tosca this summer,  will also accompany a class of students from Bisley Church of England Primary School (participants in their Primary Robins singing project).

In June 2017, the curtain will rise on a brand new horseshoe shaped opera house – the first in the UK in decades. Grange Park Opera, one of Europe’s leading opera festivals, will open The Theatre in the Woods – and the 2017 season – at West Horsley Place, a 350-acre estate in Surrey, inherited in 2014 by author Bamber Gascoigne from his aunt, the Duchess of Roxburghe.

The opening night will be Puccini’s Tosca, with Joseph Calleja, the superstar tenor from Malta, in the lead role of Cavaradossi. The festival – which runs from 8 June to 15 July - also presents an evening with Bryn Terfel and performances of Die Walküre (Wagner) and Jenufa (Janácek).

Primary Robins has brought music and singing into the lives of 1800 schoolchildren who have little exposure to it. Forty years ago, every primary school would have children sitting around a piano learning songs. This essential part of growing up has been a casualty of today’s curriculum. Primary Robins has reintroduced this lifelong skill back into the classroom with weekly singing lessons.

Grange Park Opera are pleased to have this opportunity to share their love of making music and reintroducing singing into the classroom with the audience at Guildford Cathedral.  The concert is part of a series of monthly informal free concerts held at Guildford Cathedral for the community.

The next concert given by the Guildford U3A Choir is on Thursday 20 July at 11.15am.  Coffee will be available from 10.30am.

The Refectory, Shop and Cathedral are open.
