How can I join the Choir? The choir currently numbers 16 boys (including probationers), 22 girls (including probationers) and 6 men; the gentlemen of the choir, who sing alto, tenor and bass and are known as Lay Clerks, are all experienced professional singers who pursue a variety of careers away from the cathedral, including teaching, full time performing and music administration. The choir also includes a number of choral scholars each year; these are young singers who are studying at the University of Surrey, which lies next to the Cathedral. The boys are all educated at Lanesborough or the Royal Grammar School, they rehearse every weekday morning (except Wednesday) at Lanesborough and sing Evensong in the Cathedral on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in addition they sing two or three services on Sundays. The girls choir, which takes choristers from any school in the area, was formed in 2002 and has added an extra dimension to the musical foundation. The girls sing separately from the boys; they rehearse on Tuesday evenings, sing Evensong on Fridays and have one duty on a Sunday. Boys normally audition for the Cathedral choir between the ages of 7 and 9; girl choristers are auditioned from the age of 10 or 11. Parents are invited to apply to the Cathedral Organist at any time to arrange an audition for their son or daughter, or to make an enquiry about any aspect of the work of the choir.
