Cathedral Library

The Collection

The collection is particularly strong in Biblical commentaries, Christian ethics and church history, the stock being mostly modern, but with standard works from all periods. Photograph of the Cathedral LibraryWe add about 400 new books each year, including gifts from clergy and lay people, which fill gaps in our collections, and have recently received a significant donation of most of the works of William Temple.

Meanwhile, we can post or e-mail our lists of new additions to members on request. The Librarians are usually there on Tuesday afternoons to give assistance and to welcome new members.

Membership

Membership is free and is open to anyone who lives, works, studies or worships in the Diocese, whether Anglican or a member of another church or none. But if you wish to become a member, you must register to obtain a membership card to gain entry to the Library. Schools and colleges with students taking A-level religious studies may take out corporate membership, and our stocks are complimentary to those of the Education Centre in providing aids to religious education.

If you are interested in becoming a member or in receiving lists of additions, please call at the Library on a Tuesday afternoon, write to the Librarians at The Library, Guildford Cathedral, Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP, or e-mail us at librarian@guildford-cathedral.org.

Library Catalogue

The Library catalogue is available in the Library from a computer dedicated solely to Catalogue Access. If you would like a copy of the catalogue for your own computer you may download it from this page.

Note that the file is about 8Mb - if you do not have broadband Internet access, this could take a considerable time to download.

The Catalogue is supplied as a Zip File (see links below) containing four .PDF files:

  1. Catalogue by Author.pdf
  2. Catalogue by Title.pdf
  3. Updates.pdf
  4. Catalogue Notes.pdf

If these files are unzipped into the same folder they will operate together to give access to the catalogue ordered by Author in alphabetic sequence, the catalogue ordered by title, and the additions made since the first two files were produced. If you obtain a later version of the zip file then, provided that you un-zip the contents into the same folder (directory), the later versions will over-write the older versions as it is intended that the file names will not alter between releases.

Minor updates to the catalogue are provided by the Update File (see below). If you unzip the file to the same folder the file Updates.pdf will be replaced by a later version.
