Remembrance Weekend

As we mark the centenary of World War One, Guildford Cathedral, working with Surrey County Council, the Surrey Lieutenancy, the Royal British Legion and Guildford Borough Council, invite you to join them at one or all of their events to remember those lost in World War One and all conflicts since them.

Saturday 10 November

11.00am - 4.00pm      World War One Re-Enactors

Interact with various ranking officers from World War One, in uniform, as they tell you what life was like in the war. There will be an opportunity for you to try on helmets and look at items from the war.

11.00am - 4.00pm     Military Vehicles

Come and have a look at some authentic military vehicles from the war

1.00pm - 3.00pm       Guildford School of Acting

First year Actor Musicians will perform pieces of blended war poetry and music.

10.00am - 3.00pm (weather permitting)    Abseil

The Lord Lieutenant of Surrey and others will be Abseiling from the Cathedral Tower raising funds for the Royal British Legion.

3.00pm (weather permitting)     The Poppy Parachute Display Team

Watch members of the Poppy Parachute Display Team fall from the sky and land on the Cathedral Green.

5.00pm       An Evensong for Remembrance

This special Evensong for Remembrance concludes with the exterior of the Cathedral being illuminated by a Falling Poppy Display.

6.00pm - 10.30pm       Illumination of the Cathedral with the Falling Poppy Display

7.00pm       Poppy Dinner - fundraising for the Royal British Legion

Join us in Seasons for the Poppy Dinner, as we enjoy a meal of (not quite) world war one rationing. We will be entertained by Diana North singing tunes from world war one and there will be an auction and raffle in aid of the Royal British Legion. Sunday 11 November

6.00am       Battle's O'er

1000 individual Pipers across the United Kingdom and countries around the world commence the day's commemorations with the traditional Scottish lament played at the end of battle - Battle's O'er.

The Dean of Guildford and the Bishop of Guildford accompany the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, the Mayor of Guildford, the Chairman of Surrey County Council and the High Sheriff of Surrey, at the top of the tower of Guildford Cathedral, to witness this act of commemoration. Commander Matt O'Grady will read the WW1 Tribute to the Millions.

Others are welcome to gather in the crossing of the Cathedral to share this.

Seasons Café will be open afterwards for all those wishing to buy a warming drink and breakfast.

10.00am       The County Service of Remembrance

Attended by the Lord Lieutenant, the Chairman of the County, other Surrey and Military dignitaries and also the Surrey Yeomanry, commemorating 100 years since the end of World War One and all conflicts since then. This service culminates with a gun salute and two minutes silence.

6.55pm       The Last Post

1000 individual Buglers sound this historic tribute as WW1 Beacons of Light are lit at locations across the Nation and UK Overseas Territories.

7.00pm       WW1 Beacons of Light

Over 1000 Beacons of Light symbolising an end to the darkness of war and a return to the light of peace.

7.05pm       Ringing out for Peace

1000 Cathedral and Church Bells ring out across the Nation, and beyond, in celebration of Peace.

7.00pm       A Cry for Peace around the world

1000 Town Criers throughout the United Kingdom and other countries around the World join together in an International Cry for Peace.

8.00pm       Britten's War Requiem

Guildford Choral and the Cathedral Choir sing Britten's War Requiem. Further details and tickets available from www.guildfordchoral.org/events/concerts/
