News: Young musical talent raises the Cathedral roof!

Last Thursday, 23 July, Guildford Cathedral held a dazzling musical concert in aid of the Cathedral Appeal. The concert, which is the last before the Cathedral organ is dismantled due to the forthcoming building works, brought together some of Surrey’s leading young musicians with professional musicians in a wonderful display of musical excellence. More than 500 guests enjoyed the atmospheric concert which raised over £9,100 for the Appeal.

Music included Wagner’s Parsifal, Holst’s The Planets and Elgar’s Cello Concerto – with a magnificent debut performance from local cellist Laura MacDonald, age 17, a rising young star.

Funds raised from the concert will help ensure that the Cathedral organ is equipped to continue supporting the Cathedral’s inspiring music.

Commenting on the success of the event, our Director of Operations said:

We’re delighted that the event was such a success. My thanks go to all the musicians who gave their time and in particular to our marvellous conductor Patrick Dienes-Williams for his inspirational response to our Cathedral Appeal in bringing to life his idea of a concert to literally ‘raise the roof’!
