His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh

10 June 1921 — 9 April 2021

The Dean and the Chapter and the entire cathedral community extend our deepest condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and her family following the death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. We assure her of our prayers for her and her family in their time of grief and our prayers of thanksgiving for the long life of service Prince Philip gave to our nation and to the Commonwealth. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

An online Book of Condolence has been set up at Guildford Cathedral for any members of the community who would like to add their name in thanksgiving for the life of Prince Philip and the lasting contribution he has made to the life of our nation and the Commonwealth.

Through the People's Cathedral Project we will be looking at securing the long term preservation of the collections, establishing relevant policies for future management and to make the archive more accessible with the aims of opening up the archive more.

We are undertaking a major cataloguing project which aims to get the entire archive catalogued, enabling it to be fully searchable and accessible by archive staff and researchers on site and throughout the world online.

To undertake this project specific archiving software is being purchased which will be fully functional by the archive team with an online presence which will be fully searchable and online exhibition options.

We will be undertaking a major digitisation programme aimed at opening up the archive further to the community both in the Diocese and worldwide.  The digitised content will provide a valuable research and information resource for the general public, providing a mechanism to develop deeper understanding of the heritage of Guildford Cathedral.

This programme will increase accessibility to, and promote wider use of the valuable archive collections.

As part of the project we have drawn together a toolkit designed to guide volunteers through their work within Guildford Cathedral Archives.
