Christmas Eve - The Christ Candle
Christmas Eve - The Christ Candle
Tonight, everything changes. At our Midnight Mass, we'll light the white Christ candle at the centre of the Advent wreath, and four weeks of waiting culminate in wonder. The Patriarchs' promises are kept. The Prophets' words come true. John's announcement is vindicated. Mary's trust is rewarded with a newborn's cry. The Light of the World has arrived.
This fifth candle transforms everything around it. Those four Advent candles that have burned week by week, building toward this moment, now surround and honour the One they've been pointing toward all along. At Guildford Cathedral, as this white flame blazes at midnight, we'll sing of the impossible made real: God with us, Emmanuel, the Word made flesh dwelling among us.
The darkness hasn't comprehended it. The light shines, and nothing can overcome it. Love doesn't arrive as an idea or a feeling but as an infant, vulnerable and real, in a stable in Bethlehem. All our hoping, our preparing, our waiting finds its answer here.
The light has come into the world. Welcome him home. Merry Christmas.
