Fourth Sunday of Advent -Mary

Fourth Sunday of Advent - Mary

Four candles now burn on our Advent wreath, and we remember Mary – the young woman whose "yes" changed everything. Where Adam and Eve said no to God's way, Mary said yes. Where Zechariah doubted and was struck silent, Mary questioned but then trusted: "Let it be to me according to your word." She's barely old enough to wed, yet she'll bear the infinite God in her finite flesh.

Mary stands at the end of our Advent waiting, the culmination of everything the Patriarchs hoped for, the Prophets proclaimed, and John announced. She's the last link in a chain stretching back through centuries, and she doesn't break. Instead, she becomes the God-bearer, the Theotokos, the one through whom heaven touches earth. At Guildford Cathedral, as all four candles blaze together, we see the light growing stronger, brighter, fuller – just as Mary's pregnancy draws toward its appointed hour.

Her courage astonishes. Her trust inspires. Her humility – "I am the Lord's servant" – makes room for God to act. This final Sunday before Christmas, we wait with Mary, hearts full and expectant.

What is God asking you to bear into the world this Christmas?
