Art Competition Now Closed

Closing Date 6 March

In March 2023, Guildford Cathedral is hosting the National Monument Against Aggression and Violence, also known as the Knife Angel. This amazing sculpture will be located outside the Cathedral building, encouraging visitors to remember those who have been a victim of violent crime whilst also thinking about the positive messages of peace, friendship and kindness that the Knife Angel hopes to promote.

Children and young people are invited to be a part of this important month, not only by visiting the Knife Angel and accessing age-appropriate activities as advertised on this website, but also by taking part in our Art Competition as detailed below.

As part of the month-long visit to Guildford, the Cathedral would like to display artwork from young people across Surrey and we would like to invite you to take part in a competition to have your work displayed, and to receive an award as part of a very special service at the end of March 2023.

COMPETITION

The competition is split into three age categories:

Infants (up to age 7 or School Year 2) – Superhero for Peace

Juniors (up to age 11 or School Year 6) – Superhero for Peace

Your Superhero for Peace can take any form you like; perhaps you can think about what they might wear and what accessories they might have, or what words they might use, and maybe even what they might give out to people as they travel around helping everyone to be at peace with each other through friendship and kindness.

Secondary (age 11+ or School Year 7+) - ‘My Peace’

Your ‘My Peace’ artwork can be a place, object, activity that gives you peace already, or you could design something new that would be your ideal destination, item or thing to do that would bring you ‘your’ peace. Please do use words to tell us more about your design too!

JUDGING AND AWARDS

A shortlist of 10 entries per age category will be created from all the entries, with the judging for this stage being undertaken by The Very Reverend Dianna Gwilliams, Dean of Guildford. The shortlisted entries will then be judged by His Honour Christopher Critchlow LL.B, DL (High Sheriff of Surrey), who will decide a winner in each age category.

The winner in each category will be invited to receive an award at the High Sheriff’s Installation Ceremony taking place at Guildford Cathedral on Thursday 23 March 2023 at 5.30pm. More details will be sent to winners via email following the outcome of the competition.
