Asking for Prayer

Prayer is a crucial element of Christian Faith.

We are privileged to be able to offer prayer for individuals at our services every day. If you wish to add a name to the Cathedral’s public prayer list, please email Canon Chris Hollingshurst directly at

Please ensure that you have the permission of the individual for their name to be added and permission for Canon Chris to be given an outline of the circumstances surrounding the prayer request.  Please also let Canon Chris know whether the person’s surname can be used in public, including live-streamed, services (or not).

We also offer a way of praying confidentially when it is not appropriate to name someone in public intercessions. If you would like to take advantage of this, please contact Canon Chris who will pass them to our confidential prayer circle.

Below you will find prayers to help get you started and in addition our Cathedral Community Prayer Cycle. You can also download the Diocesan Calendar of Prayer from The Diocese of Guildford's website.

If you have something specific that you would like to add to our prayers in the Cathedral, please contact Canon Chris.

HOLY Spirit, Spirit of truth, come into our hearts;
give to us all the brightness of your light,
that we may be well pleasing to you in faith and hope and love. Amen.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
St. Francis of Assisi - 13th century

Come, Holy Spirit, almighty Sanctifier, God of love,
who filled the Virgin Mary with grace,
who wonderfully changed the hearts of the apostles,
who endowed all Your martyrs with miraculous courage,
come and sanctify us.
Enlighten our minds, strengthen our wills, purify our consciences,
rectify our judgment, set our hearts on fire, and preserve us from the misfortunes of resisting Your inspirations. Amen.
