News: Cathedral Appeal launches its final push

Guildford Cathedral Appeal, which is raising £7m for urgent repairs and development, has reached more than 90% of its target, with a final £500,000 needed.

Last night, 150 valued supporters gathered at the Appeal Benefactor Reception to celebrate this success, including the recent award of a £4.6m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The Dean, the Very Reverend Dianna Gwilliams thanked supporters for all their hard work and generosity: “We are so very grateful to all those who have given so generously and MADE THEIR MARK.  With your support we have been able to achieve so much and, together with the recent news of the HLF grant, are so near to realising our goal.“

Guests also heard from Cllr David Elms, Mayor of Guildford and Vice- President of the Appeal, who said: “Guildford Cathedral is a unique and vital community resource that brings people together”.

Cllr Elms added: “So many have already responded – because saving the Cathedral matters.  At the start of the Cathedral Appeal, I’m sure £7m seemed an enormous challenge.  But now, as we stand together, we can celebrate that there is just ½ million left to raise.”

Remaining funds are needed for repairs and improvements, such as the overdue restoration of the Cathedral organ.  These vital components of the Appeal will enable the Cathedral to serve the community in the twenty-first century through art, music and outreach.
